These are some statistics relating to activities
in 2007/08.
- SALES
776,032
items were sold through the Welsh Books Council's
Distribution Centre in 2007/08, amounting to £5.5
million (gross). This represents an increase of 13.38%
on the previous year.
Sales through the Council's Distribution Centre have
increased steadily since 1990 and the Centre is meeting
its annual targets. Sales increased by 25.35% over
the last two years.
Titles are distributed to over 800 outlets on behalf
of 350 publishers.
- EDITORIAL
SERVICES
The
Editorial Department dealt with 172 manuscripts during
the year on behalf of 19 publishers.
- DESIGN
SERVICES
The
Department provided design services for 91 titles
from 11 publishers.
- SERVICES
TO SCHOOLS
Sbondonics
and Sbri-di-ri Book Clubs
16,657 books, worth a total of £82,632, were
sold to 9,907 buyers through the two Welsh-language
book clubs for Primary School children.
Schools
Project
The Council's four Schools Officers visited a total
of 772 schools and collected orders amounting to
£450,628.
- OUTREACH
SCHEME
Booksellers
arranged 423 sales opportunities under the Outreach
Scheme and books worth £168,174 were sold.
- DISTRIBUTION
OF PUBLISHING GRANTS
The
Council distributed a total of £754,061 towards the
publishing of English-language books and magazines;
79 books were supported together with 3 magazines
and 1 literary supplement from the Literature Grant.
In addition, 13 books which had received author advance
grants were published, and 21 marketing grants were
distributed.
A total of £1,358,078 was distributed towards the
publishing of Welsh-language books and magazines and
other material, such as audio-books and CD-ROMs. 233
books were supported, and 15 magazines. Payments to
authors and illustrators amounted to £231,475, and
a sum of £56,261 was distributed to booksellers.
