FUNDING FOR TWO LITERACY PROJECTS
The Welsh Books Council has received confirmation from
the National Assembly that it will be given additional
funding for two literary projects as part of the World
Book Day activities in Wales. This will be the first time
for the Book Day Steering Committee to be allocated funding
for specific projects to promote literacy.
The first project will secure bilingual promotional material
for a reading campaign arranged by the public libraries
throughout the summer. The Reading Relay organised by
LaunchPad last year was most successful, with a greater
number of children than ever visiting their local libraries
during the school holidays. The extra funding will be
utilised to produce the promotional material for this
summers campaign, namely the Reading Carnival, and
the Books Council will work closely with LaunchPad and
the libraries throughout Wales to secure the success of
the campaign.
The second project is aimed at promoting dual literary
skills, which involves reading and communicating in both
Welsh and English and being able to transfer confidently
from one language to the other. One of the most successful
projects of the National Year of Reading was a pilot scheme
at Ysgol Bodffordd, Anglesey, under the supervision of
the headmaster at the time, Elfed Williams. The funding
received will mean that the two books produced as part
of the pilot scheme will now be widely available.
