MORE BOOKS FROM WALES
The
number of books published in Wales last year has broken
all records, according to the latest figures released
today by the Welsh Books Council.
The
total of 682 Welsh-language books published during 2000
shows an impressive increase of 100 titles since the previous
year, and is the highest total since statistics were first
kept in 1972. This total includes 606 new titles, as well
as 76 reprints.
There
was a marked increase in the total of children's books
published, especially educational books, which included
281 non-fiction titles and text books, compared with 163
in 1999.
In
the same period, there was also an increase in the number
of English-language titles of Welsh interest distributed
by the Books Council. 592 titles were taken into stock
in 2000 compared with 433 in 1999, with nearly all categories
showing an increase.
