WELSH
BOOKS EN ROUTE TO PATAGONIA
Welsh schools in Patagonia are to receive a supply of free books,
courtesy of two organisations and the generosity of publishers
in Wales.
Organised by the Welsh Books Council, the delivery of over one
thousand books and educational material worth nearly £7,000
will provide Welsh-language teachers in Patagonia with a wealth
of educational resources.
‘We are delighted to be are able to assist those pupils
in Patagonia who are learning Welsh,’ said Helgard Krause
on behalf of the Books Council.
The generous financial support of Cymdeithas Cymru-Ariannin
(the Wales-Argentina Society) and the British Council has been
matched by the Welsh Books Council and independent publishers.
The extensive list of books was compiled by the Books Council
and the final selection made by Esyllt Nest Roberts, a teacher
in Patagonia, on a recent visit to the Books Council in Aberystwyth.
Ms Roberts’s post is sponsored as part of the Welsh Language
in Chubut project, which is administered by the British Council
and funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
Alun Pugh, the Minister for Culture, Welsh Language and Sport,
who visited Patagonia last year, said, ‘I have seen at
first hand the important work that this project does to maintain
Welsh as a living community language in Patagonia. This
generous donation will be a valuable resource to support those
learning Welsh.’
