BOOK
REVIEWS ON THE INTERNET
Books
from Wales were given a further boost recently when the Welsh
Books Council announced that book reviews are being prepared
for the www.gwales.com
internet site.
The work of reviewing the books is well in hand, with over 100
reviews already placed on the site. The aim is to secure 500
reviews by March 2002, with a further 500 by the following year.
The Books Council was able to proceed with this important work
following financial assistance from the National Assembly.
The reviews are being arranged by a team of editors, who will
initially concentrate on recently-published titles before reviewing
the extensive range of books that have been published since
the last edition of the books magazine Books in Wales
in early 1999.
Gwerfyl
Pierce Jones, Director of the Books Council, noted: 'We have
been aware of the gap in the field of book reviews since the
days of Books in Wales, and we are delighted with this
opportunity to use the latest technology to promote books from
Wales. Anyone with access to the internet will now be able to
read the reviews, and we are pleased that the service has also
been welcomed by authors, publishers and booksellers.'
Magazines
and newspapers will also be given permission to publish the
reviews, which will ensure that even more readers will be able
to enjoy them.
The
next step will be to develop the site further so that the public
can also add their comments to the reviews, in order that everyone
has an opportunity to discuss the latest publications.
