THREE CHEERS FOR EDERN!

In the final round of the Welsh Books Competition for primary schools, held at the Arts Centre, Aberystwyth, on Thursday 21 June, children from all over Wales enjoyed a full day of discussions and dramatic presentations based on Welsh books. Nine schools had reached the final round, competing for the Dr Dewi Davies Shield. The adjudicators were Gareth William Jones (discussions) and Jamie Medhurst (dramatic presentations).

In addition to the competitive element, the pupils and their supporters had an opportunity to be entertained by familiar faces from the world of Welsh-language children's literature, namely the authors Gwyn Morgan and Elgan Philip Davies, the illustrator Siôn Morris, and Mei Mac, the Welsh Children's Poet Laureate for 2001.

At the end of a full day of competition, of a particularly high standard, the prizes were awarded as follows:

1st: Ysgol Gynradd Edern, Pen Llŷn
2nd: Ysgol Gynradd Llanddoged, Llanrwst
3rd: Ysgol Gynradd Gymunedol Tregaron

Congratulations to Ysgol Gynradd Edern, who won the Shield for the third consecutive year, and to all the other participating schools for their polished performances.
