THE SHORT-LIST FOR THE 2001 TIR NA N-OG AWARDS


The Welsh Books Council announced today the titles on the short-list for the prestigious Tir na n-Og Awards 2001, which recognise the exceptional quality of books for children and teenagers.

The awards are presented annually by the Books Council to acknowledge the work of authors and illustrators of children’s books in three categories: the best English-language title with an authentic Welsh background, the best Welsh fiction, and the best non-Welsh fiction book.

The Awards will be presented in September, when the winners of each category will receive a prize of £1,000. The following titles have been nominated for this year’s short-list:

Best English-language Book with an authentic Welsh background

The Girl in Green, Gillian Drake (Gomer/Pont)
Arthur - The Seeing Stone, Kevin Crossley-Holland (Orion Children’s Books)
Owen and the Mountain, Malachy Doyle & Giles Grenfield (Bloomsbury Publishing)
The Poet’s House, ed. Jude Brigley (Gomer/Pont)

Best Welsh-language Fiction

Arfon y Celt, Alan Rogers (Y Lolfa)
Llinyn Trôns, Bethan Gwanas (Y Lolfa)
Pac o Straeon Rygbi, gol. Alun Wyn Bevan (Gomer)

Best Welsh-language non-fiction

Owain Glyndŵr: Tywysog Cymru, Rhiannon Ifans (Y Lolfa)
Jam Coch Mewn Pwdin Reis, Myrddin ap Dafydd (Hughes)
