ANOTHER AWARD FOR
CHILDRENS AUTHOR KEVIN CROSSLEY-HOLLAND
The
Welsh Books Council announced today (4 October) that
the winner of this year's Tir na n-Og Best English-language
Book is The Seeing Stone, Kevin Crossley-Holland (Orion
Childrens Books).
The
Tir na n-Og awards are presented annually by the Welsh
Books Council to acknowledge the work of authors and
illustrators of children's books, with the winners receiving
a prize of 1,000.
Kevin
Crossley-Holland is well-known in the field of children's
literature, most notably for his passion for the retelling
of traditional tales. Amongst the books published by
him are British Folk Tales and The Penguin Book of Norse
Myths.
He
worked in the publishing trade for some years, and he
has also produced and presented a number of radio programmes
for the BBC. He now lives in Norfolk, close to the sea
and where he spent time with his grandparents as a child.
Kevin has written seven volumes of poetry for adults,
but he is best-known as the author of children's books.
He also collaborated with Professor Gwyn Thomas on the
volumes Tales From the Mabinogion, The Quest For Olwen
and The Story of Taliesin.
The
Seeing Stone is the first in the Arthur trilogy interweaving
medieval life with Arthurian magic. The story is narrated
by Arthur de Caldicot, a young boy who lives on the
Welsh Marshes in 1199, and we share his hopes and fears
as he prepares to become a knight. The tale of King
Arthur himself is skilfully woven with the boy's story.
The
book has already won the Guardian Childrens Book Award
and the Smarties Prize Bronze award, and has been shortlisted
for the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year.
We
are extremely pleased to present the award for the Best
English-language Book to such an acclaimed author,
said Menna Lloyd Williams, Head of Children's Books
Department at the Welsh Books Council.
